It’s been over 15 years since Kanye West released “Through The Wire” his first single off his debut album “College Dropout”. Chaka Khan the legendary singer/songwriter whose voice is sampled on the song from her standout track “Through The Wire” finally expressed her feelings regarding it.
The veteran songstress on Wednesday night (June 26) appeared on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen to speak on a variety of topics most notable her thoughts on Whitney Houston’s legacy and Kanye West’s iconic sample of her song. During her segment, Cohen asks how the conversation went between her and Kanye that lead to her approval of the sample. Khan bluntly explained how she really felt about the song.
“He called me when he just got out of the hospital. He said, ‘You were so instrumental in my healing process. I changed the words a little bit to the song but I had to eat through a wire. Jaws wired shut through a straw.’ It meant that much to me. It really got my heart, tugged at my string. I was like, yeah, use it. Then when it came out, I was pissed,” Khan said after mocking the high-pitch hook. “It was a little insulting. Not insulting, I thought it was stupid! If I’d known he was gonna do that, I would have said, ‘Hell no.'”
Now “Through The Wire” is a legendary song of Kanye’s catalog and a personal one as it details his horrific car accident in 2002 which left his entire jaw wired shut and recorded the song through the healing process. While many will clearly disagree with her opinion I don’t blame her about feeling sensitive about her artwork when it comes to artist sampling songs. Watch her express her thoughts in the clip below.
