XXL magazine has officially released their highly anticipated 2019 Freshman Class cover. The 12th year edition of the series, the XXL Freshman franchise has consistently held the culture down embracing hip-hop’s rising stars as they’ve become an annual staple as their co-sign holds volumes in the current climate.
over the past decade thanks to the internet, social media and, more importantly, the hip-hop fans have helped to elect these breakthrough artists. Now for those that don’t know the selection process and how it works XXL explains it as stated:
“We talk to everyone we possibly can—industry tastemakers, rappers, our friends, fellow hip-hop heads, the guy working at the corner store, whoever—to get their input on who they think should be picked for the class. Then we argue it out as a staff and narrow down the list.”
Some of the freshman feature recent mainstream success artists like Charlotte’s own Dababy, Houston native Megann Thee Stallion, Atlanta’s Gunna, and California rapper Blueface. Some of the lesser known artist on the list is Comethazine, Roddy Ricch, Tierra Whack, Rico Nasty, YBN Cordae, and Lil Mosey.
Now within the next month, we shall be getting interviews, spoken word verses, and a cypher which DJ Scheme will be on the turntables. Given the list of artist this year, we should expect a more lyrical and comical roll-out for most of the acts. Artist like Tierra Whack and YBN Cordae maybe the most creative artist lyrically and between Blueface or Dababy we expect to laugh at a line or two from them.
As always most fans debate on the overall list, on who shouldn’t have made it or which rising artist missed the slot. Either way, we congratulate all the inductees on the list and hope for a successful career going forward. Do you think XXL got it right this year with the 2019 list? Let’s here your statements below!
