When the discussion of women in hip-hop genre comes up you think of the 80s, 90s and early 2000s era, rappers such as MC Lyte, Lil’ Kim, Eve, Missy Elliott, and Lauryn Hill pop into your mind as an artist that dominated during those times. Around this time every female rapper had a seat at the table but it’s was hard to see a large multiple of female artist coexisting among each other. Not everyone had their chance to shine, and at times they were pitted against each other like Cardi B and Nicki Minaj for example.
However, in 2019, more female rappers coexist with one another without being dismissed or compared. The female rap wave is gaining traction and if you ask me I’m here for it Rising acts like Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, and Tierra Whack are blessings of this incredible time and helps set the stage for aspiring female rappers.
We present to you 10 female rappers that are breaking boundaries in the music industry and making a name for themselves.
10. Coi Leray
Age: 22 years

Starting off the list we have one of the fastest rising female rappers, New Jersey native Coi Leray. Daughter of Boston rapper Benzino and girlfriend of Trippie Redd, Coi Leray started attracting attention in 2017 with her singles ‘Pac Girl’ and ‘G.A.N’. She dropped out of school at 16 in an attempt to pursue music as a career and released her first album titled ‘Everythingcoz’ in March of 2018. Her hit single ‘Huddy’ was what made her pop subsequently helping her sign a deal with Republic Records. This being only 9 months after the release of her first song. Her EP ‘Everythingcoz 2’ dropped this year and is being well received by fans even with its 23-minute runtime.

Kamaiyah is an Oakland-based rapper who debuted in 2016 with her mixtape ‘A Good Night in the Ghetto’. Kamaiyas breakout track ‘How does it feel’ released in 2015 was critically acclaimed the following year receiving praise from blogs such as NPR and Pitchfork. She eventually landed a feature on YG’s track ‘Why you always hating’ alongside Drake. The track peaked at #62 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. Kamaiyah’s influence grew which led to her securing her a spot on the XXL 2017 Freshman list. From there she went on to release her debut album on November 17th titled ‘Before I wake’.

Hailing out of Detroit, Michigan rapper Arkeishia Knight was born on March 14, 1999. After losing her father on her very first birthday, Kash doll was raised by her Mother and step-father. In 2014 she released a remix of the popular track ‘2 On’ by Tinashe and received airplay on multiple radio stations leading to her gaining more bookings. Kash Doll released her debut mixtape in 2015 titled K.R.E.A.M which landed her a record deal with BMB. She released another mixtape in 2015 in collaboration with artists such as B.O.B, Trina and Lyrica Anderson. Kash Doll’s EP ‘Kashin Out’ was released in 2017 under the label RMMR.

Amala Zandile Dlamini, better known as Doja cat is a singer/songwriter originating from Calabasas, Canada. She is currently based in Los Angeles and was signed to RCA Records in March of 2014 after her breakout track ‘So high’ was released the previous year. In August of 2014, she released her debut EP ‘Purrr’ under RCA records. It took Doja Cat another 4 years before releasing her first album titled ‘Amala’ in March 2018. Doja’s real surge of fame came after the release of her music video ‘Mooo!’ in August 2018 which garnered over a million views in its first week on Youtube.

Saweeti, born Diamonté Harper is a rapper, singer and songwriter originating from Hayward, California. After finishing High School in Sacramento Saweeti went on to study Communications and Business at the University of Southern California. During this time she released various covers of popular artists songs. After graduating Saweeti decided to focus on her music career and eventually went viral on Instagram after releasing a freestyle titled ‘ICY GIRL’. Saweeti decided to record a studio version after the overwhelming response and before long landed a partnered record deal with Warner Bros. and Artistry Worldwide. Her debut EP ‘High Maintenance’ was released on March 16, 2018, featuring production from her cousin Zaytoven. In June 2018 Saweeti’s single was certified Gold and accumulated over 126 million streams in total.

Born Fatima Nayeema Warner, Noname is a rapper and record producer originating from the Bronzeville district, Chicago. Being active as early as 2010, Noname finished 3rd place as a slam poet in the ‘Louder Than a Bomb’ poetry competition. She received recognition after featuring on Chance the Rapper’s ‘Lost’ on his popular mixtape ‘Acid Rap’ in 2013. After many delays, Noname finally released her debut mixtape ‘Telefone’ in July 2016 and was well received. Her debut sophomore album ‘Room 25’ was eventually released in September 2018.
4. Stefflon Don
Notable Tracks: Senseless, Hurtin Me, Phone Down
Stefflon Don, born Stephanie Victoria Allen is a British rapper, singer, and songwriter. She released her debut mixtape titled ‘Real Ting’ in 2016 and later was able to recruit fellow British rapper Giggs for the remix on the second track titled of the album ‘Real Ting’. Stefflon Don broke into the industry after her international collaboration with French Montana in 2017 on the track ‘Hurtin Me’. The track peaked at #7 on the UK chart. She went on to released her second mixtape ‘Secure’ in 2018. Her career highlights include being featured by international artists such as Drake and Lil Yachty, as well as being the first UK artist to make the XXL Freshman list in 2018.

Dreezy, born Seandrea Sledge is a rapper and singer from Chicago, Illinois. From a young age, Dreezy took an interest in fine arts and started writing poetry, scatting and singing since she was only 10 years old. By the time she was 14, rap became her main focus. Within the next few years, she started recording her music in the studio to finally released her first mixtape in 2012 titled ‘The Illustration’. As Dreezy gained traction locally she was covered by ‘Vice Magazine’ as the ‘Princess of Chicago Rap’. She eventually inked a deal with Interscope in 2014, marking the beginning of her incredibly successful career in the music Industry. Dreezy states that J Cole and Lil Wayne have been two of her main influences.
2. Rico Nasty
Age: 23 years
Notable tracks: Roof, Hey Arnold, iCarly
Rapper Rico Nasty originates from Maryland, New York. Rico took an interest in music and poetry from a young age and learned much about rap from her father who was a rapper himself. Staying true to her name, Rico’s style often features a nasty delivery over hard, grungy beats. In 2016 Rico received significant attention for singles such as ‘iCarly’ and later ‘Hey Arnold’. After Lil Yachty’s release of his own ‘iCarly’ remix, Rico saw growth in her popularity. To top it off the release of her album ‘Tales of Tacobella’ under the label Sugar Trap in 2017 gave her a break in the industry. Rico also secured herself a well-deserved spot on the XXL 2019 Freshman list.

Originating in Snow Hill, North Carolina, Rapsody has grown to become one of the most sought after female lyricists of the modern day. From a young age, Rapsody had a passion for rap and became a part of the rap stable Kool High to mark the start of her career. After going solo Rapsody signed with It’s a Wonderful World Music Group in 2008. Within a few years, Rapsody started working with some of the most established artists such as J Cole, Mac Miller, Kendrick Lamar, and Anderson. Paak to name a few. Rapsody’s lyrical ability and heart to stay to true to her roots is what encouraged her longevity. In 2016 she inked a deal with Jay Z’s Roc nation after releasing her second EP titled ‘Crown’. Her first release under the label was in 2017 titled ‘Laila’s Wisdom’, which features both Kendrick Lamar and Busta Rhymes. The album netted her two Grammy nominations including one for a Best rap album and Best rap song for the track ‘Sassy’ off of the album.
